ReportRx: Adaptable AI That Simplifies Complex Medical Reports

Understanding medical reports can feel like solving a puzzle, especially when you’re not having any medical background. For most families, receiving test results comes with a mix of anxiety and confusion. Doctors are often helpful, but they usually don’t have the time to explain every detail in depth to every single patient. It simply isn’t practical to expect it from them. This leaves many of us searching online to figure out what the bold numbers and medical terms in medical test report mean, trying to explain them to worried family members.

That’s where ReportRx steps in to dumb down the reports to our understanding levels. This new AI-powered tool makes sense of your medical reports by breaking them down into simple language that anyone can understand. Co-founded by IIT Kharagpur alumnus Kapil Agrawal and Ayush Singh from IINT, the idea came from Kapil’s personal experience of helping his family decode their health reports. With support from students at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras, ReportRx aims to become your go-to “AI Family Doctor“.

The platform not only simplifies medical reports, but also plans to introduce a feature for storing your complete medical history. This could make life a lot easier during doctor visits, where having past health records on hand is critical. Unlike government programs like ABHA, which rely on hospital systems for integration, ReportRx focuses on individual users actively managing their health data. It’s a simple, practical way to take control of your health.

They are also currently running an offer: if you subscribe to ReportRx now, you’ll receive three medical report analyses worth ₹1,197 absolutely free.

We sat down with the Co-Founder – Kapil Agarwal for an one on one interview, in helping us understand their project better, and learn about their goals and vision. Do go through their interview conducted by Desi Founder Team.

What inspired you to start ReportRx, and how did your personal experiences shape this idea?

ReportRx is culmination of personal pain points experienced during a visit to my native place in Rajasthan. During my short visit, 3 family members underwent various medical tests primarily for complete body test, cholesterol and thyroid. I got the report in a few hours on my phone. The reports that the pathology labs provide typically contain various parameters and their values and they generally highlight the out-of-range parameters in the report, but they never provide the interpretation of what that means for the patient and that is exactly where everyone’s interest lies in the report.

The elderly people don’t even understand or try to understand those parameters, mostly while the youngsters in the family are the ones who look into the parameters and then search on Google for the parameter values which are out of range and try to understand their meaning and impact on them.

This is what led me to think about a ReportRx, and it started with an experiment to build a report analyser, where a customer can just upload their medical reports and they get an analysis of what the report means for them, and what next steps they should be taking.

How do you envision ReportRx transforming into an AI family doctor in the future?

Our vision for ReportRx is only growing with time. We started with medical Report analysis only. Recently, again during an angiography operation of my uncle, I was talking to a cousin who is a doctor. He told me that these days the concept of family doctor is going down. They served a unique purpose of knowing a patient’s medical history well, even if they were not the best doctors to treat the patient for all the elements. Because of the long-term association with them, they are aware of the medical history of all their patients. A medical history becomes immensely helpful for conducting critical medical procedures.

So, this is what led me to think about how can I solve this pain point. I realized that if an user starts saving all the medical reports and records of themselves by clicking their pictures or uploading the pdf files, then the issue is by itself largely addressed. Our system can then club appropriate reports and prescriptions together and create incidents which can then be shared with the doctor through a web link whenever needed.

What specific gaps in medical report interpretation are you aiming to address with ReportRx?

We want to make it convenient for common people to understand the medical reports in a much better and holistic manner.  We do not intend to replace the doctors, but rather prepare the patients to ask the right questions to the doctor with respect to their medical reports.

We do not intend to replace the doctors, but rather prepare the patients to ask the right questions to the doctor with respect to their medical reports.

Today, the doctors don’t have enough time, patience or even the intent to explain all medical reports to their patients. They typically remain a black box for the patients. If a medical report represents my condition for certain aspects, I’m always better off knowing them.

How does ReportRx simplify complex medical reports for users?

Today, medical parameter medical reports may contain parameters which even the doctors may not understand well. ReportRx helps common people understand medical reports in simple language with actionable insights. We help users understand the gist of the report, severity of the abnormalities, if any, clarifications to be sought from the doctor and the lifestyle changes that would help them.

Are there any doctors or medical professionals involved in verifying the product’s accuracy and authenticity?

As of now, there are no doctors or medical professional involved, but once we are at a slightly matured stage, we intend to get the samples verified with the medical experts to ensure the alignment between AI and the on ground medical advice.

What tech stack are you using to develop ReportRx, and how are you training your AI models for precision?

  • Backend – Python
  • Frontend – React

We are also developing our own internal Eval.

How do you plan to handle challenges like AI hallucinations or errors in medical interpretation?

Evals handle AI Hallucinations for us.

What kind of testing procedures ensure the reliability of your AI-generated health insights?

We aim to ensure 95% plus accuracy for our results. We will collaborate with a few hospitals and pathology labs wherein a human would be able to cross-check and validate the output from AI. We will then record all the discrepancies and make necessary changes continuously. Additionally, Not all medical reports can be handled the same way, and the analysis capability of the AI needs to be built and trained from a set of various medical reports.

How does ReportRx empower users to take control of their health decisions?

ReportRx today educates users about their own current medical condition and provides them suggestions to bring in positive changes in their life through some lifestyle changes.

What feedback have you received from early users, and how has it influenced the platform?

We are currently building the MVP for the early adopters to start testing and provide necessary feedback. We have started by explaining the idea to startup community on Reddit, and the positive responses and insights got us to start building.

How do you plan to ensure a seamless and trustworthy user experience as the platform grows?

While all the personal data is important for individuals today, the medical reports are even more personal subject, and it is usually shared with only the people and organizations they trust. We respect privacy of our users and don’t share the data with any third parties. Trust takes a lot of time to build and a few moments to break. We are constantly aware of this while building our platform.

Are there plans to seek FDA or other medical regulatory approvals for ReportRx?

As of now, there are no such plans, but once we reach a certain size, we will need to have multiple approvals in place to achieve the next phase of growth.

We do not replace the medical advice at any point of time. All our services from medical report analysis to medical reports keeping only provide support to the users, and doesn’t replace the doctor.

In a competitive market of AI-driven healthcare tools, what sets ReportRx apart?

Medical Reports analysis is our first service that we start with to fulfill the gap in healthcare services. We are here to build a complete ecosystem and not be limited to a few tools in the future.

How do you differentiate your approach from existing platforms or government initiatives like ABHA?

ABHA creates a digital identity and intends to maintain the digital medical records by way of integration with various health care providers. There are approx. 350,0000 healthcare facilities in India of which approximately 8300 healthcare facilities have registered so far. It is gaining traction slowly. Once it is matured, we can also hop onto it to fetch medical records. Our approach is more user-centric wherein we are asking users to upload their medical records instead of waiting for the system to mature. Additionally, we add more value by providing users with analysis of the reports and actions for their better health.

Do you plan to collaborate with hospitals, doctors, or medical stores for better integration?

We would love to tie up with pathology labs, hospitals and doctors with integration in their systems to provide additional value to users.

What is your current business and revenue model, and how do you plan to achieve sustainability?

We intend to charge users per report analyzed. As we build the medical records management service, we would opt for subscriptions as well. AI credits and database management in safe manner is a costly affair, and in order to sustain in the long run, it is essential for us to charge our customers without depending upon the tertiary sources like advertisements.

How do you balance affordability with maintaining profit margins in such a sensitive domain?

We are currently running the show at minimal costs. ReportRx as of now is a side hustle to ensure that the costs for us are minimal. We will continue to remain cost conscious while expanding our services and footprint.

What has been the most rewarding part of building ReportRx so far?

The search for finding the right team members on Reddit has led me to realize that when you have an idea that can make a real difference, talented people will rally behind it. Money becomes secondary when the mission is compelling enough. The challenge isn’t finding people with skills – it’s having an idea worth their time and dedication.

What advice would you give to budding entrepreneurs venturing into the intersection of healthcare and AI?

There is immense need of services in Indian healthcare scenario. Entry of new players in the game only boosts the whole ecosystem without creating a threat for the existing players largely because of the size. While healthcare in metro cities is becoming very costly, the larger rural segment remains hugely under-served.

That will be a wrap of the interview. Hope you enjoyed reading it, as much as we enjoyed creating it. If you too have an interesting Founder Story to share it with the world, please feel free to submit a request here.
